Armed with Starbucks in hand, we set out to capture a few of Amarillo’s experienced women hunters. I had my latte; they had their weapons. Hunting has always played a major role in Panhandle history. The Indians who first lived on the High Plains had to hunt to survive, and so did the first settlers who came to live here. Most of us have family who remember a time when the game they brought home helped put dinner on the table.

Even though hunting is often thought of as a traditionally male sport, more and more women are joining the ranks each year. From the plains of Africa to the Texas High Plains, the women we met with this month see hunting as a great way to spend time with their families free from the stresses of everyday life.
